ABOUT THE FOUNDER

(Anthropologist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor & Singer Songwriter)

I am an Oxford University trained Social Anthropologist and a Columbia University trained Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I run a private psychotherapy practice in Manhattan and founded The Identity Wellness Project.

All of my work lies at the intersection of Culture and Mental Health and I integrate techniques from both disciplines (Anthropology and Psychology) in a variety of ways to meet the needs of my clients.

My unique training and specific approach to psychological wellness has culminated in various initiatives.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY?
  • Employs Techniques Used by Social Scientists who are experts and interpreting meaning in the social realm.
  • Employs Techniques Used by therapists & other clinicians who are experts in real-time responses that promote psychological safety.
  • ​Emphasizes Experimentation and real-time role play as a preferred method of learning, which is the fastest way to learn and experience yourself differently!
  • Creates a relationship that fosters a higher level of trust, mutual storytelling and consistent psychological safety through behaviorally based techniques that nurture and heal.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT YOU MAY BE SUFFERING FROM IDENTITY LEVEL WOUNDING?
  • Experience ongoing discontentment or dissatisfaction with life, no matter how many “wins” one has and other external measures of successes have been achieved.
  • Experience the ‘endless chase,’ when no matter how hard you try and how fast your run you never seem to really ‘get there’ or ‘find what you were seeking.’
  • Not feeling free to be yourself fully in any one place… fear of revealing your true self or being part of many worlds but always feeling like you don’t exactly belong anywhere.
  • Feeling lonely and starting to question your self-worth or your fundamental value as a human being
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF LIFE EXPERIENCES THAT CAUSE IDENTITY LEVEL WOUNDING?

Any “Othering Experience” (one that leaves you feeling like you don’t belong/don’t fit and are somehow considered “less than” as a result) can cause Identity Level Wounding.

Examples of “Othering” Experiences

  • Experience of not fitting in with your peers for an identity related factor (immigrant experience) and having the experience of being ostracized or feeling rejected as a result of not fitting in.
  • Discovering that your authentic self is an identity that society does not approve of like identifying as LGBTQ and having to come out to your family (assuming they are unsupportive).
  • Moving homes multiple times or displacement or immigration
  • Existing in marginalized identity groups (gender, race, etc.) or experiencing discrimination based on your identity (gender discrimination, etc.)
  • Cross-cultural couples who have to navigate racial inequities in addition to the regular struggles that all couples face.
  • Being bullied in school when you do not fit the norm – being called a nerd, etc. and being made fun of for being “weird”
  • Being shamed by any social group (family or community when you do not fit the norm).
  • Being rejected from your “community or origin” on the basis that “who you are” is not acceptable and grounds for losing your previously held insider status.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING IDENTITY WELLNESS WORK?
  • A deeper sense of fulfillment in all aspects of one’s life.
  • Ability to be present, love without fear, be open to new experiences and feel a sense of personal freedom.
  • Ease of navigation at the cross roads of life or points of major transitions (where decisions are more “high stakes.”)
  • Ease of decision making that is centered on values of the authentic self which becomes even more critical when people achieve financial success and choices are no longer a matter of survival or meeting their basic human needs.
  • Life as guided by the most authentic self because when the authentic self decides what your need, what you want and where to go, you must listen because this, in my assessment, is the ONLY life that brings long-term fulfillment.
